Tutoring

Since 2015, when I began working as a private English and ESOL tutor and writing coach, my primary goal has been to help my students feel more confident and capable. I’ve worked with students ages 4 to 54. Whether we’re focusing on grammar, punctuation, essay-writing strategies, reading comprehension, vocabulary, standardized-test prep, or a hard-hitting and dynamic Common Application essay, I do my best to offer them constructive feedback and valuable strategies toward reaching their potential.

I taught ESOL in Montgomery County Public Schools for eight years (2007-2015) before launching Kafka Consulting LLC. Although English is my specialty, I’ve also assisted students with assignments in history, journalism, psychology, and environmental science, and I’ve coached students who were crafting their personal statements for medical school, applying for economics fellowships, and creating cover letters for jobs and internships.

My high school students have been admitted to Cornell University, the University of Chicago, Johns Hopkins University, the University of Southern California, the University of Virginia, George Washington University, Carnegie Mellon University, Georgetown University, the University of California (Berkeley and Santa Barbara), New York University, the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, and many other outstanding institutions.

I earned my K-12 teaching credentials from George Washington University, a master’s degree in journalism from the University of Missouri School of Journalism, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Tufts University and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.

I’ve taught students who have ADHD, autism, dyslexia, dysgraphia, depression, anxiety, and postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), and I’ve worked with students in China, Japan, Taiwan, and across the United States.

Pro Bono Work

I work as a volunteer English tutor for families at The Children’s Inn at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland. Since The Children’s Inn opened in 1990, more than 16,000 seriously ill children, teens, young adults, and their families have made 60,000 visits to this supportive environment, which operates 24/7, 365 days per year.

The Inn’s mission is to provide free residential services and a wide range of programs to children, teens, and young adult NIH patients from all over the U.S. and the world while they participate in clinical research studies at the NIH’s Clinical Center.
